Week 5
I just wanted to provide a quick reminder about the class writing assignment.
The topic: If you could spend just one day with one person, at any time in their existence, who would it be?
In your paper, you need to describe and account for the following:
- Tell me who it is (this means full name, age, etc.)
- What are the conditions in which you would meet this person (in the past, present, future?)
- Be clear to why you have chosen this individual (Details!!! Make me understand why you chose this person).
- Describe 3 things you would do with this person in that one day (provide details --- each event should be its own paragraph).
- Your paper should have no less than 5 paragraphs: Intro (main idea), a paragraph for each event/thing you will do with that person, and a conclusion (summary of what you just discussed).
Remember the key word when writing any paper: FOCUS!!! The directions are clear. Organize your paper carefully paying careful attention to the order in which you present your information to the reader.
If you have any questions about the assignment, feel free to contact me.
The assignment is due no later than Wednesday --- typed or handwritten. For those of you that cannot print, write the essay by hand and you will have the opportunity to print it when we visit the lab on Thursday.

Week 1
Sentence: this is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate and that expresses a complete thought.
Example: The young woman bought two tickets to Friday's rock concert.
- In the example above, the subject of the sentence is highlighted in yellow, where the predicate is in blue.
Subject: whom or what the sentence is about.
Example: The young woman bought two tickets to Friday's rock concert.
- In the example above, the sentence is the about the young woman. Therefore, the subject is the young woman.
Predicate: this is the part of a sentence that tells what the subject is or what it does.
Example: The young woman bought two tickets to Friday's rock concert.
- Remember that everything in the sentence that is not part of the subject is part of the predicate. Thus, you should identify that the predicate in the example above as the words bought two tickets to Friday's rock concert.
Simple Subjects: These are parts of the subjects. However, they do not include the descriptive words that are part of the subject.
Example: The young woman bought two tickets to Friday's rock concert.
- In the example above, we identified that the subject is the young woman. However, the simple subject would be woman. It is the key word that tells what or whom the sentence is about without the descriptive words.
Compound Subjects: these are subjects that include more than one word and are connected with the words and and or.
Example: My brother and his wife rented a car for the day.
- In the example above, the compound subject is my brother and his wife.
Verb: the most important part of the predicate, which tells what the subject is or does.
Example: Mary Rios walked onto the stage of the comedy club.
- In this sentence, the verb is walked. It tells what the subject, Mary Rios, does.
